Why BAWO Exists
BAWO Foundation is a US 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to providing healthcare services to under-resourced, marginalized, and vulnerable patient populations in the United States and sub-Saharan Africa. The foundation focuses on maternal and newborn health — one of the most critical and underserved areas in global healthcare.

The foundation was created by Dr. Inara Omuso, MD, FACOG, a practicing board-certified OB/GYN whose daily clinical work brought her face to face with a reality that could not be ignored — that the outcomes for mothers and newborns in under-resourced communities are not determined by inevitability. They are determined by access. Access to trained healthcare workers. Access to medical supplies. Access to evidence-based protocols that exist in well-resourced settings and have simply never arrived in others.
BAWO exists to change that — through education, research, advocacy, and empowerment. Not with aspirations, but with active programs, documented outcomes, and a clinical team that understands exactly what it takes to make a difference in the field.

Dr. Inara Omuso
Dr. Inara Omuso is a board-certified OB/GYN with active clinical practice in Maryland. She founded BAWO Foundation after years of witnessing firsthand the disparity between the maternal and newborn care available in well-resourced settings and the reality facing under-resourced communities both in the United States and abroad.
Her clinical background gives BAWO a level of medical authority that shapes every program the foundation runs — from the training curricula developed for nurses and midwives to the evidence-based protocols introduced in community health settings. She spearheads the clinical direction and all maternal health initiatives.

Dr. Aye Wilson Omuso brings a lifetime of dedication to education, research, and community development to the BAWO Foundation. As the inspiration and co-leader of the foundation, he guides the organization's long-term vision — ensuring that every program BAWO delivers is grounded in rigorous research and designed for lasting educational impact.
His role extends beyond strategy. Dr. Aye is deeply connected to the communities BAWO serves and brings both intellectual rigor and personal commitment to the foundation's mission of closing the maternal and newborn health gap in sub-Saharan Africa and beyond.

Every program BAWO delivers is designed by a practicing OB/GYN and grounded in current, evidence-based clinical protocols. We do not guess at what communities need — we bring the same standards of care that exist in the best-resourced settings.
Real change is built from inside the communities being served. BAWO partners with local healthcare workers, organizations, and institutions — not to replace what exists, but to strengthen and equip it.

Training a healthcare worker once is a good start. Training them to train others is how you build capacity that outlasts the program. BAWO's educational approach is designed to multiply impact long after the session ends.

The Legacy Behind the Name
BAWO Foundation traces its roots to Madam Bessie (Bawo) Wilson Omuso — the matriarch of the Omuso family and daughter of Chief Kari of Nembe in Bayelsa State, South-South Nigeria.
Her character was defined by generosity, love, and an unwavering commitment to her family and community. These virtues now serve as the pillars of the BAWO Foundation's mission.
The foundation carries her name forward not as a tribute, but as a commitment — a declaration that the values she lived by will continue to shape the work being done in communities that need it most.
When Dr. Inara Omuso founded BAWO, she was not just building a nonprofit. She was carrying a legacy into the work she had spent her career training for. The personal and the professional became one mission — to serve maternal and newborn health with the same spirit of generosity and commitment that defined her family's matriarch.
